I'm not sure what problems you were having but I am able to log on to AKO with my Pre. I couldn't try the regular AKO mail because it just redirected me to the beta page but at least I could log on to AKO. I would think you should be able to do the same and then just click on the email link.
I did have an issue at first though. When I first went to the AKO page I had problems because I got the page when I have to click to accepts whatever terms of service are on that page (the same thing you get when you go to the AKO homepage on the web) but the page didn't seem to load all the way because the button I am supposed to click wasn't there. So I just reloaded the page and it showed up. Now granted the page was a little messed up and the text didn't flow correctly but if you zoom in on the page you could see the button and click on it without clicking on any of the links that it seems to be lying under (you'll see what I mean when you get to that page on your Pre).
So try that and see if you can get in to AKO and your mail via the web. Also, when you tried to set it up via the email program on the Pre were you using EAS and not POP or IMAP? Hopefully it works for you because it works great for me.
As for getting into the beta I would just email them (beta.help@us.army.mil) and ask. That's all I did a few years ago and they switched me over.
