Sprint PCS Mail To End 12/31/08 - Idiots!
Check out the back of your latest bill, one of the best features (imo) of Sprint is their pcsmail. No frills, basic, direct-to-phone... and it's ending.
http://www.sprint.com/landings/pcsmail/
Huge points lost in my book.

Yea I have to agree also..the sprintpcs one I use for my Resume and Job stuff...IMO I think it looked more professional than using a Gmail or Yahoo email address when looking for a Job. I also use it for my personal business...Guess its time to look elsewhere at other options...Such a Shame

Yea Sprint totally gets a thumbs down for that move. Trying to get other mail services to work properly is sometimes a hassle.

I never used it... always thought it was a dumb idea to start. I'd never want my "main" email stuck with a cell phone provider. IMO that would be like using "bellsouth" for an email. Yuk!
Plus, hotmail, yahoo, and aol are much better choices.
Then again, I have my own domains hosted all over the place (with some hosted at hotmail, and aol [switch mx records]). I've used gmail (terrible email [weak filters, block attachments, no folders, etc....] and gmail imap is their "version" of imap that I don't care for). My main email accounts are with a domain that I own with a paid account at everyone.net.
Paid accounts and your own domains looks the most professional these days... plus no issues with your email...

Theog is right on that - I also use everyone.net and have not a problem with email and I am using FlexMail. I definitely do not like the idea of a middle person.

Does this mean my phonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com email/sms is not going to work anymore when they shut it down? I hope not.

Theog - We do pay for those SpirntPCS e-mail accounts. That along with everything else that comes with being a SprintPCS paying customer.
In my interviewing people for jobs, I could care less where their e-mail account was at, so long as the domain name was nothing offensive.

Also, I use Sprint's SMTP for my outgoing mail and my work's IMAP server for incoming.... does anyone know of alternatives?

Holy Crap!
If this eliminates being able to use Sprint's SMTP outgoing server, there are a lot of people who will be affected. I use it with my SnapperMail.
Anyone know?
TIA

A whole lot of ISPs require a direct connection to use their smtp. I have my own domains but use sprint's SMTP for outgoing on their devices just as I use my ISP's smtp at home. If they end SMTP support their would be a serious uproar.
But even the hosted pop means that they are opening pandoras box when it comes to Early Termination Fees. Lots of people are goiing to have problems with picture mail which has as a default your phone number@sprintpcs.com address.

SPRINT QUESTIONS
: If I click on an email address (e.g. name@company.com) while on the web w/Centro, what happens if I don't have sprintpcs as versamail account?
Currently clicking on the link brings up versamail.
Is it possible to use versamail with Gmail?
Will we still be able to Browse Contacts when looking up addresses?
I would like answers from Sprint.
Thanks for the help. FastFrank

Gmail works with versamail, although sending is very slow.
@messaging.sprintpcs.com should still work, but notification are extremely slow, if they ever arrive (in my experience).
Hopefully, user complaints will be enough that they re-enable the service.
I also hate gmail's lack of folders... who do they think they are?!?!? But I like everything else...

Gmail has folders, but they're called "Labels". Try creating one for a message, then after you give a message a label, select to "Archive" the message. You'll see the message is gone from your inbox and when you select that "label" in the Labels menu to the left of the Gmail Inbox page, you'll see the message stored under that label.

I understand the use of Labels, it just a very "microsoftic" thing to do... take a perfectly good feature (folders) and try to make it better. The wheel was round enough, as it were...

From your desktop, open your Gmail account and go to Settings. Then to Forwarding and Pop/Imap and select it.Then to Pop Download and enable one of the first two Pop options.
You can do this from your device too, if you are setup to access your html account from the device.

Cant believe this . I use Optonline here in the NY area and I need to use the Sprint servers to get email as you cant get email using optonlibe.net. this is a terrible thing.

lol... I have an old sprint SERO account... as most people on here, I'm making out like a bandit on sprint. I'd never fix my mouth (fingers) to complain about something so trivial.
But that is me... as I've said, I use other services that look more professional with my own domain.
Why don't someone start an online petition? Or make some other "official" recommendation. I've not seen many want to raise arms over this change. No one I know on sprint use the email. lol
Good luck in finding a new email provider.
All jokes aside, everyone.net is a great provider... been with them for years (between 7 to 9 years) without any issues.
If you want free, aol, hotmail, etc has everything anyone could ever need right now.
Heck, aol has G-R-E-A-T F- R -E- E IMAP.
AOL is a "premium" free email service... you can even use your own domain and it looks just like regular aol. They also took out the signature line from outgoing emails.
So many options....
If you live in a Microsoft world, hotmail just about can't be beat... or even spring for a cheap exchange account at www.sherweb.com/ . Although, hotmail may be all you need with your treo.
here is a current review:
