Now I encountered a problem with one and only one album. All the MP3s of this one album show blank square in the player. I noticed these files were tagged with GIF-pictures. Obviously, I thought GIF must be the reason, so I deleted the files from Pre, retagged the originals in WMP with new JPEG picture and made a sync into Pre. Alas, still blank squares only in the player.

Stupidly, I didn't wait until I got home, and forgot that I had tweaks installed (consider how easy it is to forget that the things other phones have require tweaks) and updated on the spot. The next morning, I had a problem updating two of my apps from the catalog because my Pre complained about insufficient space. I Googled, and found the answer was to do a partial erase, and this worked.

However, when I logged back into my account, none of my Palm Profile stored contacts were on my device. All of my bookmarks, downloaded apps, and even the names of other email, contact and messaging sources were there...but not my Palm Profile contacts. I waited for a few hours, then tried a Full Erase. Same result.

At this point I was furious, so I had two support chats (it was 11 pm MST) and was told that I would be called by Engineering. When support opened, I jumped on the line and was transferred from 1st to 2nd level support where I was told that my case will be escalated. It was at this point that I became severely disgusted with the boilerplate responses and decicided to speak with corporate. I was then transferred to customer service where I was told the exact same thing. However, this guy was a little bit better about his boilerplate, and permitted me to vent as needed. After threatening to keep my Blackberry active and turn in my Pres (my wife has one also) for recycling, he gave me the number to the corporate headquarters.

I've yet to call the headquarters, because I am at work and need to finish up some things at this location, but once I am headed back to my office, Palm is gonna hear it.

I'll keep you all posted.

Essentially what I will be discussing is how the Palm Pre and it's Synergy feature could be used along with Facebook to create a sort of public directory that is available on any phone with Internet access sort of like DNS is available to any computer with Internet.

If Facebook created an option to allow people with your name to see your phone number they could essentially make that public, and anybody with a Facebook account would be able to login to their Facebook account on their cell phone similar to how people on the Palm Pre do now. They would enter their account info in the preferences options of contacts and it would pull all of their friend's into their contacts app and if their friend had posted a phone number it would be added, if they had posted a picture the phone would use that for the contacts picture.

Well What if this technology was on every phone? What if Facebook made an option to be part of the public listing, sort of like a phone book style digital database except it would be user maintained because each person would control their own phone number on their profile. This would essentially mean all you would have to do is type someone's name and your phone would look up that name on Facebook, first checking your friends, then using GPS to locate you and check local listings, compare your schools to seek out the correct "John Smith" It would need a pretty strong artificial Intelligence, but Facebook's suggestions are pretty accurate already so maybe that technology could be used?

Like I said it would essentially be like DNS for people, Your phone would be like your computer, the contacts app would be like your browser, Facebook is the DNS server, it finds the person's phone number (ip address) if you type their name (URL) Get what I'm saying? Of course you could remove Yourself from the public directory at any time.

I think this would be a pretty cool technology. I have my wife and kids set to speed dial by holding down the on screen buttons 2 through 5 and it usually works just fine. I have noticed sometimes when holding down any of those keys that it won't speed dial but it will just register the key I am holding down as if I was dialing a number. For example if I hold down the #2 key on the keyboard instead of calling my wife, a #2 will be displayed. I end up having to dial the phone number manually.
This week I found a clue to what may be causing this.
My Pre is blue tooth linked to my Garmin Nuvi 780 GPS and really works nicely (address book and all) and when the problem occurred, after several attempts I decided to try shutting phone off and restarting in an effort to troubleshoot this problem but no good as it still would not speed dial. I then turned off blue tooth on my Pre and voila! it worked perfectly.
Now I have to say this is intermittent even when blue tooth is turned on.
