With major concerns over hardware (I am hard on my phones) and not wanting to buy in before an update, wouldn't you expect a new pre to be announced at CES 2010?

All I want on a new pre is more memory and a sign that the hardware is sturdier. My contract is up in December and I assume I would get the phone for the heavily discounted price. Correct?

Should I hold off until CES?

evdo rev a and wifi
fm radio would be nice
have special apps in phone like office or something professional thats not included in todays phones and not available in the apps store
the back cover can be touch stone compliant but i feel what would be a nice add on would be a solar panel for charging on the go
stereo speakerphone
4 or 5mp camera with possible webcamera would be nice
no keyboard, only touch screen with touch keyboard that rotates with the users preference on keyboard layout whether landscape or portrait mode
a special app store custom made for the pro series that include apps a business user would need or use, all for free or low cost because of high purchase price of the pro series covers cost on the apps

the name of the phone would be Palm Pro series phones whether XL or NRG(for solar panel). not related with the palm treo pro because they are related with the treo. the palm pro series includes apps that normally arent sold in app catalog and could include features a business user looks for like remote access to computer, long battery life, and the ability of getting things DONE.

I think something like that, with a 4 inch screen à la Sony's XPERIA X10 or HTC's HD2 with 8 GB + MicroSD expansion, 5 MP camera with video recording AND OpenGL and it could be perfect (well, at least for me)!

What do you all think? Cheers!

I was wondering recently, If there would be a chance for a 3rd model from Palm?

I recall back when Palm was about to release the pre, an article stating they were working on a 3 tier model strategy. One being consumer level. This is what I believe is the Pixi. A lower budget, entry level phone for new smartphone buyers. Two being prosumer, the pre. A mid level phone for the more advance user, multi-media user, and of course all the social networking aspect. Which brings me to the third, professional tier. This of course would be the high end mobile for the business and power users.

Now considering the tight grip Palm had on any leaks about the new os, known only as Nova at the time, as well the pre hardware (I don't recall much on the pixi either). I pose the question, could we possibly see a 3rd model within time?

At the moment, I feel Palm is playing a bluff and not throwing their cards down. Their playing the hand their dealt and when all the chips are in, With a little slight of hand they'll slip in the ace they've been palming to win the game.

I know there's some who want a Pixi Pro or a Treo Pro replacement as a result of a recent Precentral blog. Some simply want a better Pre. While others want a landscape slider.

But IMO, that can come later. These first few devices need to matter. Also mentioned in same blog, Palm needs a thin slab device. 3.7 or bigger high res glass screen, 64gb, solid casing, connector on bottom, no replaceable battery so a sealed cover but integrate the touchstone tech in back. No buttons at all on the face.

Predictably, some will say, no, that's an iphone. But it's the form factor that many want. It's also something many on sprint or even verizon are still waiting for. Many would avoid the Droid in favor of something that "looks" better but had a similar screen.

The Hero or Eris is on the right track but Palm has plenty of room to do it much better and more high end. If Palm wants to be firmly in the top 3 in terms of mind share, then they need at least one form factor to match em.

This isn't a thread intended for those wanting another form factor and defending their choice but for those who do want something like this...to add how Palm could put their own spin on it.

What if Palm was just buying time with the Pre and to a lesser extent the Pixi to make it to the 4G launch on Sprint. Sprint and Palm have a good relationship, if they could come out with a Pre2 type device with data plans cheaper than 3G on Verizon and ATT they would have a huge WIN. Sprint might actually be smart to keep palm to itself for another year.

The above link, plus this bit of information from PreCentral.net:

So the P120/P121VZW must be an upgrade Pre of some variety, and the only logical conclusion is that it has more memory, likely 16 GB instead of the current 8 GB. So will Verizon get an updated Pre? Probably, but so will Sprint (and probably Bell), so we can all relax, be happy, and store more.
Perfect for browsing the web, media, & reading text. Software keyboard - landscape & virtical.

Flip the phone over (accelerometer activates other screen - but can lock one screen to stay on w/ software)

Picture Side Two - Blackberry bold type keyboard. Screen size could be smaller than pixi (wouldn't matter b/c reverse side). Camera lens & flash, ear speaker, mic on this side. AND treo type d-pad surrounded by gesture area. Perfect for power typers (email, messaging, editing documents).

No sliders & best of both form factors in one phone.

Palm Paradox - A paradox is a statement or group of statements that leads to a contradiction or a situation which defies intuition. The term is also used for an apparent contradiction that actually expresses a non-dual truth. Typically, either the statements in question do not really imply the contradiction, the puzzling result is not really a contradiction, or the premises themselves are not all really true or cannot all be true together.

Mainly targeted at the business users, with all the guts and glory from the Pre, but in a more Treo like form factor. The mockup is basically a Treo Pro with a slightly enlarged Pixi screen (same resolution) and all buttons removed and replaced by a gesture area.

Release this puppy at a good price point and give the blackberry Tour/Bold/Curve a run for their money.

Not really sure what they will call it. The Treo name holds a lot of marketing power, but I have a feeling it will be another "P" name.

I made a similar mockup of what I though the Pixi was going to look like and I was pretty close. :D
