Default Do the letters on the onscreen dial pad (phone app) can be used?

I noticed that when using the Pre as a phone, the on screen dial pad has letters bellow each number key.

Does anybody knows how to use them? It would be nice to use them to type the name of a contact instead of using the keyboard.

There is a function that allows you to search while typing in a number.. I saw it in a video. Go to your phone screen, and go into the settings of it. It should be in there. I don't have one or else I would help you more.
