OK, I got the DUN to work on my apple PB G4, and I was very excited to be able to use my 650 as a modem via bluetooth. Then the disconnects started. read earlier in this forum to use WhatRoute to ping Google got that to work, but I am still getting disconnected :-( I think the longest I was able to stay connected was like 4 minutes? Also when I get disconnected, in the menu bar it says disconnecting forever. I mean I have never had the patience to wait for it to go away so that is a long time.... not really sure how long it does that, but it is a while. Also when it is disconnecting it slows my 650 down dramatically? This would be really cool to use this if it could work properly. Any info anybody has will be good info, regarding this issue would be much appreciated :-)

Oh yea, using the DUN, uses your data on your phone plan... right?

Thanks all for your help!!!

I got it working...thanks to all of the great info in this post! Question though...when I am connected, and I try to call my 650....I either get my Cingular voice mail, the call comes through and severs the connection, or I get a Cingular message saying "this number cannot be reached at this time" (not good). Anybody else get this??

i posted this at another forum after reading this thread, but basically its step-by step instructions on how to set up a treo 650 using cingular, so here it is:

if you want to learn about how do NOT use GPRS script generator and just want to connect to the internet using ur phone, check this site out:

Code:
 http://www.taniwha.org.uk/
and here: http://www.taniwha.org.uk/gprs.html
and if you have a treo 650 and want to use DUN (Dial Up Networking...) check out this site for a bit of explination on cingular phones:

Code:
http://discussion.treocentral.com/showthread.php?t=71567&page=1&pp=20
and for Sprint phones, check here:
Code:
http://vocaro.com/trevor/treo-dun/

they usually have the answers to most of your questions... now ill explain how i got it to work for me... (Treo 650 on Cingular GPRS)

1. Make sure both your computer and ur phone are Discoverable, and if they are already paierd, delete all pairings between ur phone and ur computer... (on both machienes); this is done in the bluetooth pref pane under devices and on the treo, in Bluetooth>trusted devices>details

2. d/l Generic 3G GPRS scripts from first site listed on this post... and install them (/Library/Modem Scripts)

3. Perform a soft reset on the treo

4. Go to the Bluetooth app and turn on Dial-Up Netowrking (DUN) on the treo

5. Pair treo to computer using MacOS X assistant (add new device under the little bluetooth menu icon) (personally, i turned off encryption, in the Bluetooth pref pane, but i dunno if this has to do with anythin or not...)

6. The setup assistant should recognize the DUN service, and therefore the check box for using the phone to connect to the internet should be available...

7. Select "Use GPRS" in the setup assistant...

8. Now enter the info:

number to dial (without quotes): "wap.cingular"
username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
password: CINGULAR1
Modem Script: Generic GPRS CID1

and then click done..

9. Go to network pref pane and click configure under Bluetooth..

under TCP/IP, PPP should be selected.... then enter these IPs into the DNS servers:

66.209.10.201
66.209.10.202

hit apply now, and your DONE!! just open up internet connect and select the Bluetooth icon and it should work!

Default still can't connect

Hi very clear instructions ... but in trying to use my Cingular Treo 650 as a BT modem with my PowerBook I keep getting disconnected then this error message:

"Could not negotiate a connection with the remote PPP server. Please verify your settings and try again."

I saw that some folks earlier seemed to solve this. But even changing the number from the **99***1# to wap.cingular and adding the DNS server names doesn't seem to do it for me.

Any more ideas? Thanks...

Sorry, not really, but just make sure that you are using the correct modem scripts and that you actually performed a soft reset on your treo instead of turning the phone off, then on again.. (the soft reset button is on the inside of the battery cover, by the sytlus...)

Great Thread!

Thanks Section 8! I was FINALLY able to connect with your instructions. The only thing I had to do was follow Ross Barkman's suggestion of disabling "Send PPP echo packets" in System Preferences:Network:PPP:PPP Options. After doing this, I was on- no problem.

There is one caviat: I am able to send and recieve e-mail, but I cannot connect with any web browsers. Be it: Explorer, Safari, or FireFox, I cannot connect to a web page. Any ideas?

Kudos to all!

Shadowmite (DUN Hack) & Ross Barkman (GPRS 3G CID1 Modem Script) - You guys rock!

Cingular Unlocked 650 w/ Ti15 OSX 10.3.9 w/ USB D-Link DBT-120

Spent 2 hours tuning the connection and was able to test performance using DSL Reports Mobile test page. Speeds ranged 20kbits to 142kbits!!!

Email (Entourage POP/IMAP) and Safari works great!

Tomorrow I will field test the setup and write up more details

I am interested in a few things:

1. Will I be billed for minutes or will this fall into my unlimited data plan usage?
2. Do incoming calls interrupt my connection or go to VM?
3. Is there a data cap that will limit how long I can stay online?

I appreciate everyone time for posting their results! It has definately save me time and now I have a true portable office.

Cheers!

as far as beinng under the unlimited data plan, it would make sense that it does because all they care about it what data gets sent from the phone... I believe DUN is just a feature of the palm OS and certain models such as the 650. I don't think any providor will be able to tell the difference...

and as for safari not working, make sure that you are not using any proxies... you can check this in the network preferance pane under configure... also, if you have a firewall enabled, turn it off and see if that is interfearing with it... lastly, make sure you have the correct DNS server addresses also in the network pref pane... hope you solve it.

I get the same error message with an unlocked GSM Treo 650 from palmOne. The Status goes from Authenticating User... to Disconnecting... and then the error dialog window appears. Has anyone figured out a solution?

Thanks!

Nevermind. Being an original AT&T Wireless customer, I got DUN working by following webtoker's instructions at the bottom of page 1 of this thread.

In a nutshell: Use the Generic 3G CID 1 modem script, don't enter anything for Telephone Number, Account Name and Password, and uncheck Send PPP echo packets.

Activity Monitor showed a peak of 20.08 KB/sec downloading a movie trailer from Apple with a rough range of 6–12 KB/sec.

BTW, sadly, my World Clock Alarm going off disconnected me and forced me to soft reset before I could reconnect but no other problems so far.

Default I really need some help

I just got a Cingular Treo 650. I have followed all the guides I can find, and everything seems to be working, between the phone and the computer, but the computer doesn't seem to be getting to the internet. I am including the setting I have now, and hope someone can point out what I am doing wrong... I am running OSX, on a powerbook G4.

I. Under Network

A. TCP/IP
Configure IPv4 - Using PPP
DSN Servers - 66.209.10.201
66.209.10.202
B. PPP
Service Provider -
Account name - WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password - CINGULAR1
Telephone Number - *99***1#, and i have also tried **99***1#
Alternate number -
Save password box - checked
PPP Options
nothing checked but the disconnect when user logs out, and redial if
busy

C. Proxies
None of the proxie servers are checked
Use passife FTP Mode box is checked

D. Bluetooth Modem
Modem - Generic 3G CID1
Show Bluetooth status in menu bar, and Show modem status boxes
are checked

II. In Internet Connect
Configuration: Main Number
Telephone Number: *99***1#
Account Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Show modem Status box is checked

When I try to connect, Internet connect pops up and says "The connection has failed. Please verify your settings and try again."

I am at the end of my rope, and really need some help... Thanks

Hello RUBINGR-
I finally got mine up and running. I was using the same configurations you were. I deleted my DNS settings and left them blank. I also left my phone number blank as well. I was able to get online- no problem. Hope this works!

Could not negotiate a connection with the remote PPP server. Check your connections, and try again.

Any ideas?

Has anyone connected successfully under *Tiger*? I get "connect script failed" every time (I'm using the Generic 3G CID1).

You need to replace your DUN app with the hack on http://www.shadowmite.com, then follow the instructions on the rest of this thread.
