Man, I wish I had read this before going through the mess I just did this week. It would have saved me $40 and at least 5 hours of (needless and frustrated) troubleshooting.
I was one of those who assumed Apple's claims of built-in support for Palm's was legit and I didn't need Palm's HotSync drivers. After I realized that fact, I brainlessly purchased MissingSync, opting to NOT install Palm Desktop software (because I knew it was ugly and old). After I figured out I only needed the HotSync Manager I was ticked ... and $40 poorer.
Anyway, I wrote up a quick tutorial to try and detour others from making my same mistakes.
I agree. I think this should be a sticky (and should be linked from Apple's iSync website, really).

If you just bought Missing Sync, see if they'll refund your money. They use an online activation system to validate your registration information, so it should be trivial for them to refund and then reneg your registration. I bought Missing Sync last week myself, but I am also thinking about returning it. After all is said and done, I'm just really not seeing the value of it.

I sent them an email this morning asking just that ... haven't heard back yet. If they don't, I'm going to actively disavow them in every Treo related forum I can. I don't want other's wasting their money on the product, especially if the company doesn't value good rapport.

I use Missing Sync and it's great. In my oppinion if you don't really use your SD card for much, then MS won't be worth it to you. If you use your Treo as an .mp3 player or have movies on your card, then the iTunes integration and desktop mounting is worth the money. If all your going to do is sync, the Hotsync manager can do that and MS would be a waste.

I also read that Palm is doing away with the HotSync system altogether and going with a system that is very close to the missing sync technology. It will likely be free before long...
I have used missing sync with 2 clie, 2 samsung PDA phones and now with my 650 and I have found it to be a very cool MAC app if used to it's potential.

It's true, as I linked to in the opening post of this thread. Future Palms will not use HotSync, but will instead utilize SyncML, the universal sync language used by iSync and most cellphones. This is a significant step in the right direction for Palm; it will allow their devices to [finally] usefully interoperate with other vendors' products, and will greatly reduce the barrier to entry for making their devices work on a variety of platforms. SyncML support is native in OS X through iSync, and SyncML engines are available for Windows and Linux.
HotSync was great technology ten years ago, but it has run its course. HotSync is incompatible, horribly inefficient, and a burden for both users and developers. It isn't beyond the realm of possibility for Palm (neé palmOne) to even incorporate SyncML into the Treos, but that's highly unlikely. I think we all know that we'll be buying Treo 800s when then come out in 2 years; in addition to SyncML, hopefully they'll finally have more than 32MiB of RAM, too.

I just succesfully synched contacts, notes, calendar and tasks first try with the entourage conduit included in Office 2004... My mind is blown, I was expecting a fight and for it to take half the night to get done, but surprisingly it worked.

Best Solution
I need some help and I am willing to pay for some advice.
I have 2000+ contacts in Now Contact which I use daily on my Macs. I used to use a very cheap Palmpilot. Now I bought a treo 650. Questions:
What is my best solution for putting Now Contact info on Treo. And is there 2-way sync between the Treo and Now Contact or would it be only 1-way (NOw contact to Treo)? Or should move all Now Contact data over to another program and forget about it? I need most of the infor in Now Contact, especially the categories etc. I am pretty savvy but this stuff is getting too riduculous and I dont have time to figure it out. I dont mind having two parallel systms working. But I need a game plan. HELP!

I used Now Contact for several years and used to sync it with my Visor platinum with no issues. How many categories do you use? Please be aware that Palm OS only allows ten plus 'unfiled' - this is a limitation of the OS and can't be got round.
I would prefer to use the Mac's AddressBook if it wasn't for the various issues raised on this forum, as it has the potential to link with everything else (Mail, Fax, VOIP, Filemaker etc)

Other than wondering when SyncML will come to the Treo <-> Mac universe, my other big question is about the photos I take on my T6.
iSync seems not to know about them, and they seem not to be making it over to my PowerBook. Am I missing something obvious, or is this another pothole?
EDIT: Okay, having read more it seems that while the photos stored in the Treo's RAM are copied over in a single big file (from which iTreo gets 'em) there's no way of getting at them that's easier than just transferring the images to an SD card and then moving the card to the laptop.
I did this, it works, and I can't believe that this is the state of things. Meh.

I've been trying to use isync per these instructions,
http://www.palm.com/us/support/macin...sk421revd.html
and when i do it there is no 'evidence' of my device in isync or vice versa.
the calendar would be nice to sync, but i mostly really want my address book. i'd use their palm calendar if i had to but i have 800 contacts and there's no way i can deal with manually inputting them.
any suggestions?
thanks! tricia

I am quite glad to find this thread because I am a happy new treo owner and I can't wait to get my mac address book in sync with my new toy. But obviously my mac and my palm are not the best friends yet. I am usually not totally dumb with technology but haven't had the time either to do much research. Encouraged by the good souls who already posted valuable information I dare to ask: starting from iSync and the full package of software that came with the phone? what's next? How can I get this iSync conduit? I have only a hotsync conduit.
If this back-to-basics is already in another thread I'd appreciate if someone could point it out to me (I browsed for a while and couldn't find).
Thanks! and probably this could be useful to many other newcomers...

Hi.
1. Just install Palm Desktop: http://www.palm.com/us/support/macin...c_desktop.html
If you have Mac OS X 10.4 skip next step
2. Then install Apple iSync: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/isync/
3. Activate iSync, you'll find it in your Applications-Folder. Click on Devices / Palm OS Synchronization.
4. Activate iSync as a Conduit. Open Hotsync from your Applications/Palm-Folder. Click on the HotSync / Conduit Settings and double click on the iSync Conduit to change the Settings.
5. Sync.
@Tromano: Have you activated iSync itself (Step 3)? Done in the iSync-Application, not in the HotSync-Application. The instructions-link you posted seems to be missing that.

Sync very slow
I am using isync and missing sync to wirelessly sync my palm treo 650 and my powerbood G4 via bluetooth. I use versamail sometimes to access my mac mail on the palm device. When I do a wireless sync it takes a very long time to complete. It seems that most of this time is involved with synching the versamail. I don't really need to sync my email. Is there some way to disable the sync for versamail but leave all the other sync features? Any other tips for speading up bluetooth syncing?
Thanks,
Steve

I run into trouble on step 3: iSync does not support Palm OS devices and asks me to open an "iSync Conduit" -- which I haven't found yet. I'll keep looking. It was not on the plan to upgrade to Tiger (I am a happy and scroogy user of panther).
Thanks for giving the tips anyway.

I would like to keep my iCal calanders better in sync then they are. I have the Missing Sync and have done syncs wirelessly, but there are two big limitations to this:
If my master computer goes to sleep, it won't wake up when I attempt to hot sync wirelessly.
I only want to sync my calendar, not everything on the Treo - it takes too long.
Does anyone know how to just isync the calendar wirelessly?
Thanks!

The only way to turn of iSync's contact syncing is to open up the isync application, click on your Palm (treo) handheld, and uncheck the "Contacts" box.
To resync contacts you will need to re-check that box.
Unfortunately, there is not a way to turn off contact syncing within MissingSync.
Hope this helps!

Thread Cred-$ and 3rd party Sware
Bless this Thread! You've Got Thread Cred, yes indeed!
Can anyone expand on the post about how perfectly iTunes syncs AB and Contacts and: What Else?
It sounds like iTunes does it all. Is this true? What good is iTunes without an iPod? And an iPod still isn't a phone or is there a way to configure it (other than voip?) or Pbook Isn't it subscription only? I am starting almost from scratch. Just bought 12"Pbook, not set up yet. Traumatized by previous Win98 xperience. Just getting started after years of foggy brain from spinal pain. Still foggy but much improved. How much will it cost me in additional $and$oftware because I chose Apple? Was starving artist; brief but intense sucess;got $ when too ill to spend and enjoy; now it's all going to ongoing medical bills-don't know how to allocate my dwindling resources. Any suggestions? I want my Treo650 to be my acess point to the world . Sorry gotta go now. thanx y'all!

Quite a useful thread. Thanks!
The only downside is, you had me sold on switching to Palm Desktop as my PIM, and ignoring Missing Sync. Then at the end I had to reverse my thinking again....now I'm not sure which to use. More research, I suppose.
