Default Deploying Tomorrow

I'm wheels up at 2240 and arrive at Doha on tuesday. The step after that will be to hitch a ride to BIAP on a 130 and start my tour. I can't go into detail as to what I'll be doing, but the deployment itself is 100 days and I'll spend a fair amount of time outside the wire.

Like everybody else over there, I volunteered for this. If I get killed or wounded, I'll consider myself spent in a worthy cause.

I think I'll be able to check in here occasionally with a report from the front, as it were.

Good luck, a successful mission, and a safe return. As you know, I do not support the way Bush and his administration handle and have handled Iraq, which doesn't mean I hope the US troops fail. The bravery and dedication of the soldiers in Iraq is admirable, regardless of the political leadership.

Keep your head down 1911 and give us some 'eyes on the ground' reporting.

1911sforever,

Thank you for your service. Talk with the locals, especially the kids if you get a chance. Pay attention to your surrondings and keep safe. I salute you and your family for the sacrifice you volunteered for.

Godspeed buddy! Drop us a line when you can.

This one's for you:

March to the battlefield,
The foe is now before us;
Each heart is Freedom's shield,
And heaven is shining o'er us.

Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement!

End of Day One. Checking in, learning the ropes and personalities of the unit. What a bunch!

General impression #1 is that the wrong people are in charge of this war. We should have promoted some special forces majors to three star rank and told them to handle it. The problem isn't with W or Rummy...the problem is with a military establishment that has produced a generation of generals that is ready to fight the 3rd Guards Shock Army in the Fulda Gap. That ain't the war we've got, and as much as the "Big Army" talks about fighting an insurgency they just can't put their heads around it.

General impression #2 is that this is a really MASSIVE operation. Baghdad International is humming with activity. Camp Victory is flippin' enormous. There are a lot of pieces moving around this chessboard.

General impression #3 is that this that this generation's soldiers can take their place among those of our honored past. I get a lump in my throat every time I see the Striker guys head out, ready for business. Those that worried about the Nintendo generation not being tough enough can rest easy. These kids can take it, and dish it out.

I'll be travelling quite a bit in the future...Mosul and Ramadi are on the itinerary. It's a whole different war out west. I think the Marines are handling things differently. Anyway, it is bed time.

Great to hear from you! I am sure I speak for all, when I say, your "on the ground" input is invaluable. Let us know what Mosul is like. Let all the young men and women out there in it, that we here @ TC support them.
