I hadn't heard of it. Surprisingly, what I saw on the website wasn't terribly revealing (admittedly, after only a couple of clicks).

Do you have any experience with it?

No, but the specs make it seem more powerful than the Asus eee but about the same size. (of course that may mean that it doesn't have the quick boot up of the Asus.)

That MSI unit is almost identically speced to the Eee 1000HD:

http://eeepc.asus.com/global/1000hd.htm

Probably very similar performance, but I'm not sure why the "HD" model doesn't come with the Atom processor when the other 1000 models do.

Personally, I prefer the SSD Eee models over the model with a regular hard drive. There are many advantages to having a solid state drive.

Looks like reviewers like the MSI keyboard more then the eee 1000's keyboard.

I don't mind the HDD vs the SSD. I would like to try out a DIY SDD thought. Still debating on getting the eee 1000 or the MSI wind...

costco sells the msi with a 90 day return policy but online only (free shipping). It was nearly as heavy as my IBM x41 with a smaller screen and KB. I just don't think netbooks are for me.

I buy alot from Costco, but they want $440 w/shipping for the Wind.

I paid $360 -$50 rebate = $310. (mwave.com)

This is being written from a Wind.

The system is surprisingly fast -- MUCH faster than I expected with a 1.6 Atom, and 1gb of memory. I have 5 browser windows and Outlook Express open, and I was watching the Daily Show's HD Hulu feed with no trouble over the very good G wireless. The connection is "excellent" -- whereas my Dell gets a "very good" usually.

Surprisingly, the Wind is able to stream back HD content smoothly when hooked up via cat 5 to the network and another PC with the DVR. I feared that HD would overwhelm its CPU etc.

The screen is bright, clear, and very readable. The LED backed 10" display is better looking playing back video than my Dell's.

The keyboard is OK -- I'm still getting used to it -- but they're almost full sized keys, with decent travel and feel. Not as springy as I'd like though.

The touchpad is workable, but a bit too touchy -- I prefer using an external mouse -- something I never do with my normal laptop.

The function key is in the corner -- to the left of the Ctrl key. I find this maddening, and I'll have to remap those two keys.`

The design of the mouse buttons is regretable -- a single 1/4" x 2" lever -- that is very easy to miss hit.

I fervently miss dedicated "end" and "page up/page down" buttons. The Wind requires function key combos.

The speaker volume is AWFUL !! -- I cannot hear almost ANYTHING without headphones or powered speakers.

The Realtek audio software is an evil joke -- it pops up EVERYTIME I plug in headphones, demanding 3 responses, remembering nothing, and apparently having no means to prevent it from reacting every time. Last summer I sold at a loss a new HP desktop because of this same horrid Realtek audio software.)

I don't like where the USB ports are located -- which unfortunately is also where most netbooks put them.

This Wind is crazy light -- I'm now writing this lying in bed, the netbook vertical on my chest, as I single finger type -- and its practicaly weightless -- especially incomparison to my normal 4.5 - 5 lb. Dell.

I intend on getting soon another gb of memory ($20) as well as a 6 cell battery ($60) to back the 3 cell that it comes with.

Though upgradable, the 120GB drive is likely fine, especially since I travel with multiple usb powered WD Passport drives normally.

btw, a little while ago I took out the battery pack -- and was forced to struggle for ten minutes prying it off -- weird -- it fits so tight that i needed a nail file to finally get it off.

For the uses I intend for it, and its modest cost, I'm pleased overall with this Wind.

I bought a Wind the end of October. I love it. It has more of everything than my old laptop, and as Barye pointed out - weighs nothing. I actually carry it in my purse. It goes everywhere with me, and the 6 cell battery lasts a good long time - long enough to watch movies on an airplane and do email from the airport between flights.

The only thing I dislike is the touchpad, but you can't get away from that on any laptop/netbook anymore. For some reason, every manufacturer places them right where your wrists rest so that if you are typing large amounts of text, it is too easy to hit the pad with your wrist and delete. Why can't they put them off to the side?

Ali -- how is your speaker volume, how long are you getting w/the 6 hr, and does the battery come off easy ??

The speaker volume is low, but as I'm primarily using it on planes I pretty much always use a headset. It's actually louder than my old Dell, and as loud as the full size laptop it replaced.

I haven't run the Wind steadily to see just how long one charge lasts, but I have run it in 20-30 minute increments every day for a week without a problem - tethered to my Treo 800w for most of the time.

I have a Twitter friend with the 8 cell battery, and he tested it this week and ran it for about 7.5 hours solid on a single charge.

I haven't removed the battery since I initially wrestled it in there, so I couldn't say how easy it is to remove.

Thanks --

I've shown this Wind to a few of my clients and now they want me to get them Winds for their staff.

I'm reluctant -- as I don't think its a good all day work platform -- especially for non-geeks

That's the "cute factor" rearing its not so ugly head. Everyone who sees one wants one just cause it's cute, and they don't think through why they want one. One of my colleages saw mine and decided to get one for himself and one for his wife, but he's an occasional evening check-the-email-surf-theweb-while-lying-in-bed kinda guy, so it's perfect. I spend my every waking hour at the keyboard, and even though it's a powerful little bugger, I need a full size machine in front of which I can spend time (and not go blind in the process!).

I just got a U100 for my birthday and am very pleased with it. I actually ran it for nearly a full day before wiping the drive of XP and installing Ubuntu. It's now happy in Tux land. The volume is a tad low but is usable for watching youtube and talking on skype. I'll have to try streaming video soon,

I do agree that the touchpad is twitchy and the pg-up pg-down key combo is a little awkward. I'm getting used to it though.

The 3-cell battery doesn't last very long (couple of hours) when blasting away on the net, but that is certainly not unexpected.

I expect more battery life from netbooks and umpc's.

And you can get it - just not from a netbook with a three-cell battery. Look for 6-cell battery variants.

remapping pg up/pg dn to F keys; CAPSLOCK to CNTRL; and INS to END has made the keyboard better for me.

I would love to remap the Function key -- reverse it w/the CTRL key -- but I'm told that Function keys are not remappable.

I'm amazed at how fast it is -- I'm able to watch HD video streamed from another PC w/o trouble (over cat 5)

I've seen 6 cells selling for about $60 on ebay

Barye - I know what you are saying about the MSI's weak speakers, Centro speakphone is louder than the Wind.

its like there aren't any speakers -- on full max I put my ear to the speaker grill and you can barely tell there's sound !!! (not a joke btw)

its ridiculous.

forget watching a dvd with someone -- or by yourself -- can't happen without headphones.

Also the usb locations on at least the recent eeePC are much further back and more rational

It desperately needs a right angle power plug as well -- since it can't apparently put a power port on the back (which would be best) The plug now sticks out 2 inches and is begging to break the port.

I would LOVE to turn off the scroll function on the track pad -- constantly it gets activated -- always unintentionally, never useful.

Otherwise I stll really like my $300 netbook ...

Hmm... my sounds isn't awful, just low. I can comfortably watch (and listen to) videos on the beastie. Of course, I removed windows and replaced it with Ubuntu 8.10 within 20 hours. I have also replaced the wifi card with an Intel 3495. Most of my electronics don't survive long with their warranties intact. ;-)
