Default Sprint Reigns In Data Usage

Just saw this on Phone Scoop. One of the main reasons I have Sprint is because of their truly unlimited data plan. Now that's a thing of the past starting in mid July and probably a reflection of their move to stem their losses:

"Sprint Reigns In Data Usage

Today, 1:24 PM by Eric M. Zeman updated Today, 3:59 PM

Sprint is updating its Terms Of Service starting in mid-July and will be capping mobile broadband data usage at 5GB. Previously, Sprint offered truly unlimited mobile broadband. Once the new Terms Of Service go into effect, users who go over the 5GB cap, or a 300MB roaming cap, will be charged extra fees. This will apply to both network cards as well as tethering mobile phones to laptops. AT&T Mobility and Verizon Wireless currently cap their data usage at 5GB, also."

Doesn't sound like it applies to phone usage. Am I right?

Interesting. Although I agree that this seems to apply to broadband service only, I wonder why not to phones? My guess is that few if any exceed that limit. My regular usage which includes a fair number of hours of streaming music and podcasts is less than 2GB.

I read about this elsewhere recently, on a Sprint-related web board, and my understanding is that this change is only planned to affect tethering (phone-as-modem) and data card (aircard) usage. It's not supposed to affect other plans like the Vision ones. Also, I don't think data usage applies to phone/voice usage, so that shouldn't be affected. I don't know much more about this than I've read, which isn't a whole lot, but I hope this helps.

Doesn't do much to them in terms of subscribers I would assume, considering "unlimited data" (aka capped at 5gb) is equal to other carriers but only $10 or so a month. So they still have a large attraction in the data area.

I hope I didn't read this wrong...does this apply to its broadband card and service?

Yikes. I tether my treo all the time on my unlimited plan. 5Gb is a lot, I'm sitting at a little over 1Gb and its the 24th of the month... although, I'm not torrenting movies/software, etc. Maybe they are trying to get rid of that crowd.

Yea, it only takes a couple of people to ruin it....

Be interesting to see if someone needs over 5gb (honestly) if waivers will be allowed....

Default Really?

If this is factual why hasn't more places latched onto this. At this point I chalk this up to conjecture. I have a couple of friends that work for sprint retail and they have not even heard a whisper of this proposed change in the ToS. I also imgine if this was an upcoming change that is to take place in the next few weeks, subscribers would be receiving emails and regular mail notifications of the change to their service. Since people have not been getting those, myself included, and since the retail staff haven't heard of this, and they would need to know if they are to sell the service, I'll say that this is not happening anytime soon, if at all.

I hover around 2 GB a month. I hope Sprint will be around for a long time. I really like them. ATT is a rip off!

Sprint also plans to offer data usage monitoring on Sprint.com beginning June 8th.
With a rolling three month plan, you really don't have an argument... but of course, someone will come on here and complain that they did not use "that much" data. lol... whatever.

The monitoring is cool... seems sprint is improving their online capabilities... that is nice.

I'm glad sprint went with a fast, clear, and understandable clarification on this issue... sometimes management in big companies happen to do something right.

Ok, here is a question for all you guys - I have unlimited data with sprint and I just check my data usage online and it says 434,541 but there no where it says if it is bytes, bits or whatever - how far away am I from the 5GB limit - I mean would that be 5,000,000? If so, than I shouldn't have to worry or is it 500,000 and maybe I should worry?

theog,

Holy smokes, 434,541KB is 3.6GB - yikes!! That means every once in a while I could either hit or go over the 5gb limit. kinda bummed - I don't even use it to tether, just email, web, and SlingPlayer.

I wonder what it will cost over the 5GB limit when they impose it.

Well, if you read the BoyGenius, it says that it only applies to cards and tethering....

You should be good....

theog,

I just found another post that covered that just a few minutes ago - I don't know who it was that posted it though - but since you both say the same thing - I've become a happy camper! Thank you for verify!

That's tricky. Since they 'supposedly' don't know you're using PdaNET, how is that going to count?

My reading indicates it is related to tethering - not surfing on the device itself. Now June Fabrics needs to say something about PDANet.
