We're near releasing new, talking versios of our language dictionaries for Palm.

They're mostly Treo / Centro oriented (apparently), but should also work on most Tungstens; sorry, no support for Sony devices.

The talking dictionaries *requires* use of external media card as the voice file alone is 150 MB for the Spanish and 225 MB for the German dictionary. Apparently, those are native speaker audios, not synthesized ones.

Accordingly, the time HotSync takes in order to install the file is between 30 and 60 minutes!

Here it is...the PREVIEW download of the BEIKS TrueVoice English-Spanish-English talking dictionary for Palm OS:

A few things to note:
- this is a PREVIEW, not a FINAL version
- it's fully functional, but some planned features are not activated yet
- the final version may be 2 to 3 times larger
- it requires a Palm device with a media card with 80 MB free
- it takes 15-20 minutes to complete HotSync, so be patient

I want any and all of your feedback. Some of it, subject to your discression, may be sent to my email versus posted here.

All in all, though, we're open for all things, good and bad.

There will be German in the final release, but I am afraid we're not ready to run the beta in multiple languages.

I installed it, my wife and son speak Spanish, I get an error after the HotSync 'There is data missing. Installation will terminate'
The dictionary is on my Treo, but I don't see any way to make it speak.
The HotSync only took an extra few minutes than normal, so I don't think the audio files sync'd, on my card I only see Spa2En.pdb and SndSpaV2.pdb.

broncot, could it be there was not enough storage space on your card?
I must admit that in all my 9 years with Palm I do not recall seeing such a message from HotSync. Google is also silent on this exact error, which means you likely haven't quoted it precisely.

DarkEye, try switching to Spanish-English dictionary and browse through the words; a speaker icon should appear at the upper left corner right before the headword entry field. Pressing it or pressing the navigator selector button should produce pronounciation.

I think I know the answer, but would you clarify what is your natural expectation on how to obtain pronounciation? I.e. what would you like to do in the program in order to get a word pronounced?
That's one of the features I had mentioned are not unlocked yet...but it's always good to hear from a real user.

Hmm, so it appears this is our own error :-)

Are you trying to run the program directly from the site link or are you did you download it to your local computer first?
I strongly suggest doing the second.

Otherwise Explorer (or whatever browser you use) usually downloads the application to the temporary downloads folder which is usually so deep in the folder structure that many applications - possibly including ours - often fail to handle the complete folder name.
