Do you get poor cellular reception with your Palm Pre?
The Sprint Airave is a tiny cell tower that you set up in your own home.
Technically the Airave is a "Femtocell," about the size of a book. It look a lot like a wireless router. For many happy users, the Airave is the difference between poor reception and great reception with a Palm Pre.
Overview- The Airave provides 5 bars of signal to about 25 feet in all directions and 3 bars at 40 feet to any Sprint phone.
- The Airave is so powerful that some report it blocks other cell phones.
- Connects to your cable DSL, Cable-modem or other high-speed internet using an Ethernet cable.
- You must be able to receive good GPS satellite signals.
- The Airave only works in the US (the reason for the GPS).
- You should have a wireless router (WiFi) as well because the Airave does not transmit EvDO data (just 1x).
- Up to 5 calls can go through the Airave at one time.
- All Sprint cell phones work with the Airave (but not pre-paid).
One other huge benefit to the Airave is that it can greatly improve battery life. Cell phones use much more power if they are constantly searching for signals or switching from Roam to Sprint. With 5 bars, the cell phone can settle back and relax.
Cost
Originally piloted in 2007, the Airave costs $99 plus $4.99 per month for one phone. Up to 5 users is $20 per month. But
many users report that if they have had repeated issues with poor signal strength at home and ask Tech Support politely, they have been given Airave and had their $20 per month fee waived indefinitely.
(But make sure.) You will have the same cost per minute as you would under your normal plan unless you pay $10 for unlimited Airave minutes.
Setup
You need to make sure that you have everything in place and then call the toll free number: 866-556-7310. Expect at least 40 minutes on the phone. Then it may take anywhere from 60 minutes to overnight for the Airave to find the satellites and finish it's setup.
One tip, not in the manual: Use the external GPS antenna when you first set up and even run it out a window (pointed to the sky) until it can acquire the satellites. The Airave needs good GPS signal to set up. Once you are set up, still consider using the external antenna if the Airave will not be near a window. Even taping the external antenna to the top of the Airave is better than the internal antenna.
Caution
The Airave does not work with other carrier's phone and in fact is so powerful that it has been known to
jam other cell carriers within it's 25 foot radius.
Also, the Airave might use the location for your DSL or Cable central office instead of your home. Often in a few seconds it coorects to your home location.
