Add me to the chorus. This has been happening to me too! It actually happened at the Sprint store when I was setting up the phone, but the guy thought maybe I'd inadvertently hit the power button when closing the phone. It happened another 4-5 times after that. I've been extra gentle with it lately..and I haven't been using it much today... so it has happened since last night. I guess I'll have to take it to the store and hope they can get me a replacement soon.

I have 2 Pres too. I had to upgrade both phones from 1.0 to 1.0.2. No Touchstone ( I have one, but not yet used it).

My phone developed the frozen blank screen, but I can't reproduce it on my wifes phone.

I had limited use of the phone on day one on 1.0. Just used it for simple calls in/out. No problems encountered.

On day two I updated to 1.0.2 and used the phone like normal. No time to play with features at work. Got home and spent some time surfing the net and youtube.

Several times while I was trying to figure things out the screen times out and goes blank. This is normal, probably due to my reaching the timeout limit. I wake up the screen by sliding the keyboard in/out or out/in depending on when the screen goes blank. I then continue with what I was doing....

Anyway, several times while sliding the SCREEN down to the keyboard (I hold on to the back of the Pre) I would notice the default background picture would FLASH and the screen would go BLANK. It doesn't go totally dark.

I could still see the back light still on. When I tilt the phone at angle I can see the light blank background of the blank screen. The backlight LED is still on. Repeated attempts to recover fail. Sliding the screen/keyboard in/out produces nothing. No gestures. No keboard activity. The only fix is to press/hold down the top right power button. After doing so, the Palm logo pulsates and the Pre turns back on.

I can reproduce this blank screen problem after intentionally snapping the screen closed after 3-4 times (done with no apps open - just the Pre background wallpaper).

But just like Rotello mentioned above, apparently there seems to be a "loose connection" maybe when the screen is snapped down/jolted that causes the Pre to freeze. Only a power recycle fixes the problem.

I never experienced this with webOS 1.0 but like I mentioned, I only had very limited light phone use only on day one. I only noticed this blank screen lockup on day two AFTER I upgraded to 1.0.2 and needed to open/close the screen to "wake it up"

I don't believe the problem is with the Touchstone, since I haven't opened the box to use it yet. I charged both phone using the USB power adapter.

I'm gong back to the Sprint store tomorrow for an explination.

I think its a hardware problem, with an outside chance that its related to webOS 1.0.2

Are you guys sure it's not something simple like the battery loosing connection with the contacts? When sliding the phone closed the battery may move a little separating the battery from the contacts. I would check to make sure the battery doesn't move around inside the phone.

I'm in Scottsdale too, lol.
can you post a link now? I'd like to merge these 2 threads if they cover the same issue.. so you can all share the feedback..

Same problem just started for me this morning. It was fine until this morning, not sure what changed. However, now when I go to close the phone using the momentum of the closer or if I open it faster, the phone powers off. The battery icon flashes with what I think is an ! and then the phone turns off and I have to reboot it.

This is quite annoying and am wondering what has caused this sudden change.

Yup, that's exactly what happens to mine too.

Here is my thread. Apparently this issue is occuring to those without Touchstone also so it's probably not the Touchstone that is causing it.

So it seems like there are two problems...

1. Where the screen goes blank but the phone does not completely power off

2. Where the phone completely powers off

I would assume the causes to this would be two different things, one being hardware and one software?

I am experiencing the second one I mentioned, where the phone completely powers off. It definitely happens more when the phone is closed "hard". It also seems to happen more when I close it a certain way....which is...

when he pre is open, place your middle finger directly on the top of the pre (like where the headphone jack is, but on the piece of the phone that will slide upwards) and your thumb on the bottom of the phone....your middle finger and thumb should make a "C" and when you push your fingers together it should close the phone...

usually when i do it that way i can get the phone to crash and power down...if i just use my thumb on the actually screen part of the phone i will not crash and power down, but i don't think you can get as much force generated that way

The phone does not seem to power off completely as in the backlight is still on for a while, but the only way to actually get anything done on the phone is to reboot it. That is why I originally said it powers off since in essence it seems it did, but technically I suppose teh backlight is still on.

An update on my piece of the saga:

I went to the Sprint store today and demonstrated the problem with the slider causing the phone to power off. The tech looked at it and told me that they've heard of this problem happening occasionally.

He claims to have replaced my battery with a different one they had in stock, and so far (4 hours now), the problem seems solved for me.

Of course, yesterday I posted saying I thought I had this fixed another way, and had to take it back... We'll see if the new battery is the real fix.

That's exactly how I can get mine to crash.

EDIT: Just crashed it and then the phone wouldn't turn on. I jolted the phone a little and it started powering up so I set it down on the table and it went blank and wouldn't power up again. I took the battery out and put it back in and now it's powering up again. There's definitely some battery/power connection problem.

Was at Sprint store this morning and demo'd the crash 2 times. Was told I'd be first to know when new shipments come in and that I'd be taken care of right away. Said they'll get them in either today or tomorrow.

Fingers crossed.

@Rotello, definitely let me know if the new battery works. Maybe that's the issue?

Default Opening and Closing Keyboard Causing Crash?

I have been having issues sometimes when I open or close the keyboard the screen goes blank and the only thing I can do is do a hard reset.

Has anyone else been having this issue?

A faulty battery would be a hell of a lot cheaper to replace for Palm than replacing the phones! Hopefully that's all there is to it!

Aint that the truth Manny. I'm debating whether to drive the 30 minute drive to the closest Sprint store to see if changing out the battery would fix the problem. Would be a long drive especially considering they do not have any Pres in stock and if that battery doesn't fix it, then I'm SOL for now and would have wasted an hour in the car.

I am having the same issue. My screen goes blank when opening or closing the keyboard. I have the touchstone and have had issues with the touchstone back cover and the regular cover. I plan on going back to the Sprint store today.

Having the same issue. Got it at radio shack, and was the last one in the district. Will try to live with it for a bit, but it tends to be off a lot. It's very sensitive to any impact.

For those of you who purchased two phones, I would suggest swapping the batteries and seeing if you can reproduce the event.

Somebody please do this so we can try to isolate the problem. I only have one being single and all.
