Light Sensor and Keyboard...
It was my understanding that the light sensor on the Pre would determine whether or not to dim the screen and turn the keyboard back light on or off, but the keyboard always seems lit up when it is open... :/

I believe the light sensor only applies to screen dimming, not the dimming of the keyboard. The screen brightness setting may correlate to the key lighting, but not the sensor dimming.

If you go to Device Info / More Info, then touch Preferences in the upper left corner, then Interactive Tests / Screen, you will find a series of screen tests. The fourth test is for a Light Sensor--which my Pre does not seem to have... It definitely fails this test, and I am wondering if that might be why my battery life is terrible--much worse than some others have reported.
In another thread that started (speculatively) before the Pre was released, some people have reported that their light sensor works. Does anyone's Pre pass this Light Sensor test?

I haven't experimented with this greatly however, the keyboard brightness appears to be related to the screen brightness. For example, if I turn my screen brightness all the way down, my keyboard light is off. On the other hand, if I have my keyboard turned up, say to half way, they keyboard also seems to be lit up. Because of ambiant lighting I'm unable to determine if the keyboard is lit even in bright lighting conditions. I'll have to play with this more when I get home from work tonight.

Funny enough, I can't really tell if the keyboard light is on or not in good lighting. So, it's kind of like the refrigerator light test for me, in reverse. By the time I get it into a darker area, I can't tell whether the light has just switched on or not.
However, mine does turn off the audible alert for text messages when my Pre is in its holster case, and so it just vibrates. Is this dictated by the light sensor or proximity sensor?

As far as I can tell, mine doesn't pass the test either. But, I'm not sure this accounts for my poor battery life--I get the same poor results even when the screen is off.

Mine passed the test. It took a moment for the screen to dim, but it definitely did. The keyboard light remained on, which I believe it is supposed to do considering the question you are asked: "Is the keyboard light on? Did the screen darken?"

Mine doesn't dim either. Maybe it's not correctly implemented yet? I liked how my Touch Diamond dimmed the screen.

When you say "it took a moment for the screen to dim," note that the screen WILL dim even in bright light as a power-saving measure. Tapping the screen will make it brighten again.
What I would expect is that the screen would dim pretty much instantly in low light.

Yeah, I know. It isn't that, because when I tap on the screen it doesn't brighten again. I also have my backlight set to dim after 30 seconds, and it dims in lowlight after about 4.

Gotcha. Then mine's simply not working...

Took mine in the bathroom and turned out the light. At about 7 seconds the screen dimmed slightly, then at about 30 seconds it dimmed further and the keyboard backlight turned off.

Well, this answer my question I posted elsewhere...I forgot about the light sensor. I thought something was wrong with my screen.

I myself tried the light sensor test after your post and my pre did not pass either, but my battery life seems to be fine, but i have a little oreo and my keyboard seems to almost be raised to where the keyboard pushes in when i text and makes squeaky noises..its soo annoying i wonder if i can take it back with these problems.
