I'll have a rough guess at around 120 days to reach a million sales. Of course other people have mentioned the price and the number of units that will be available, and how quickly they will be able to continue production. It's very hard to guess without knowing even how many units they will have available when the phone is released.

The potential is there that's for sure.

I think the Eos will catch on quickly. Especially if the Pre gets a lot of media coverage and the Eos is sold at a real bargain price compared to the pre.

And, I think people are going to rave about the form factor once this is out in circulation. Extreme thinness = new hotness.

You can't sell what you don't build (Link). I predict the 1 millionth Pre will sell ... in early 2010.

better question is will the pre stem subscriber losses at Sprint, and will they gain any?

Morgan Keegan & Co. analyst Tavis McCourt said last month that Palm needed to sell 5.5 million units in a year to revive its profits. In keeping things simple, 5.5 million divided by 12 months equals 450,000 units average a month. Pre will possibly hit the 1 millionth sale in just over 2 months ( ~ 70 days).

I am assuming the potential intial shortage of the Palm Pre will offset the mass purchase rush of euthansiets like you and me 1:1. I am no expert, but Ashok Kumar, an analyst with Collins Stewart is, with his less-then-steller view of Palm and the Pre. He thinks these sales figures are "highly unrealistic."

2 million Pres sold in the first year equals out to 170,000 units a month and the 1 millionth sale in ~ 170 days. I know it doesn't take a genius to put these numbers together, but it does provide a pretty good window.

Kumar gets more press than Paris Hilton.

The Pre isn't going to be the only phone, nor is Spring going to be the only carrier with WebOS palm phones. So Palm has much more to gain from this than Sprint in the long run and Palm should come out of this just fine with Treo style and Pre style phones on all the carriers.

They also don't have to sell a million phones in 2 months or anything of the sort. The numbers will ramp up just like they did for the Blackberry as it opens up on different carriers all over the USA and world.

All the while Apple will be dry humping AT&T's leg for awhile to come.

90 days is my prediction for the 1M mark, but that depends on pricing and whether or not they finally decide to start advertising.

Palm is going to do just fine, especially when Pre reaches other carriers and countries (Australia/Telstra is getting it in the second half of the year).

People continue to compare it to apple sales, which is not realistic. Many people bought iPhone for several reasons - the hype, Apple/****** network strength, and because they owned apple products. About all Palm has is the hype, and as we see Pre sales numbers come in they will be at least as impressive, factoring in the other two reasons, as iPhone sales.

Of course, this is a prediction.

One other thing to keep in mind as you kowtow to the mighty iPhone - Apple has only sold 20M iPhones total worldwide. Other phone manufacturers sell 1.5 billion phones annually. They have such a small slice of the pie they are almost insignificant.

But even drama queens like Paris and Kumar get a lot of their stories right.

ok ... the luanch is just around the corner. If we go with the June 7th rumors, we are looking at a iphone / pre mega news story. Anyone want to change their prediction ?
