Default held it at the Sprint conference - it's called the Treo 600

ok people - first a couple of caveats. I'm at a Sprint user conference. I am using my Treo to post and review replies, so please don't kill me with questions.
And now for the goodness - I just watched a keynote video of our man Jeff, where he showed the Treo600 for about 45 seconds. I'll do my best to recall what I saw:
- camera on top
- SD slot on top
- thumboard on bottom
- no flip
- maybe a <tiny> bit smaller screen
- d-pad above the thumboard, between the usual 4 app buttons
- antenna stub on upper left (I think)
- narrower than current
- overall size? my non-scientific guess would about half-inch or so longer than Treo folded down, but narrower. The one he had was metal case, it looked like, kinda a gun-metal blue.
What else? That's about all I can remember - don't abuse me with the millions questions that I wuld send myself - it was just a quick blurb of a video, and I'm bringing it to you first - ? maybe.
Happy posting, all!!!

Default Battery

he said the battery life was much better, so take that with as much salt as you wish.

What Sprint user conference and where?

All reports I've seen say Handspring dropped support of SD slots.

How does an SD slot fit in with both and antenna and camera on the top of the phone?

I would hope that HS included some kind of memory card support in the new treo. Without such a capability, you are forced to carry around a PC just to maintain a backup of your PDA... I imagine business people would prefer just backing up to a CF or SM card.

And a camera? I suppose all the phones have em now... ah well

nrosser, thanks for the scoop. The biggest question for me would be:

1) Given your experience with the Treo, what was your overall impression of it? Were you impressed or disappointed?

Other questions (if you're able):

2) How did they fit the thumbboard into a narrower device? Is it smaller and/or using a new layout? Did it look usable?

3) Camera on top. Is this a pivoting camera capable of self-portraits or is it along the lines of the Nokia 3650 (on the back)?

Default update - I held it

(what a goob I am - to get all hopped up over a freaking phone thing - gag - stop me now)
OK gang - I held it at the Handspring booth. It DOES have an SD slot on top - the camera lens is actually on the back, near the top.
thumboard - a littl smaller, and the keys are domed to make them easier to hit Closer togeher, yes, but seems simpler to hit. They moved the num keys and made them more on the left side of the thumboard, rather than right-oriented, as they are now.
Sledomvisitor - I'm at the Sprint PCS User Forum in Dallas.
Now time to eat some buffet lunch. yummm.....

Does the camera come with flash?

I hope that if you can, render it from your impression so that we can see what you see.

What CPU and OS does it have? Oddly, this to me is the most important factor I'm looking for in the new one...

Thumbs up

This is so exciting I could pee in my pants. Oops, wrong forum

Any rumor about the price? Timeline (due date)? Is it GSM or CDMA or both?

You are the man of the hour: Thanks for the scoop!

I guess it's CDMA version since

1. It's numbered 600, similar with 300
2. Showed on Sprint Conference

But I believe there is a GSM/GPRS cousin ready for Orange network.

nrosser...You da man!

With a D-pad and no flip, it sounds like the screen is not a touch screen? Is that right?

That I would highly doubt. A PalmOS smartphone without a touchscreen, that would be pretty hard to sell. There are Palm (and PPC) smartphones out there without flips that have been/will be successful. XDA, I700, I300 to name a few.

I truly appreciate the info, too.

Now...

Can anyone confirm it or provide a link to any online media confirming it?

if the sprint version is the 600, does that mean the new 270 is the 540?

btw, is it a given that sprint will be carrying the 600?

Yes, Sprint will definitely be carrying the Treo 600. Aside from the fact that the device was being demoed at a Sprint conference, I believe Donna Dubinsky already confirmed this in a conference call.

However, maybe its time for a new forum for the Treo 600?

Prudence dictates that until Handspring itself releases public information about the new product (1) no new named-by-proxy forum be created and (2) carriers be attributed as carrying it!
