Cancel order and wait until memory issues are resolved? or...
take a chance and let the bleeding-edge order ride!
Decisions decisions...

Palm almost went broke once before from pre-announcing something. I think this is a disaster. 32meg would have been marginal even with the old file system.

Yes.
I never thought, on the eve of the arrival of long-awaited product that many feel the original Treo should have been, we're having a discussion about running out of memory because the contacts database is too large.

Well mine is comming from Vienna Channels, giving me some time it looks like before I will have to make a decision. When it comes, I will have to play with it a bit and see if the memory problem is so bad that I would be willing to give up on the big discount. If it is, I will just send it back and wait to order one with better memory.

Having started the thread asking PalmOne to recall the 650 over this issue, I would certainly suggest cancelling your order. Even those who accused me of whining note that we have to vote with our wallets. If you want to spend this kind of money on a phone with what is nothing short of a serious design defect, go ahead. Otherwise, send P1 the message that they must fix this problem by NOT buying at this time.

I use 15 of the 26 MB on my 600 and have a large contact database. If it somehow won't fit on the 650 with, say 5 MB left over, I might have to reevaluate my options.

See.. on one hand, I don't think it'll affect me because my contacts aren't in the thousands, but at the same time, P1 should be held liable for making a poor design decision. Its just unheard of.. I want them to hear all TCers/Treonauts, but I do want to have this phone in my hands asap.
As far as I know, I will be using the 650 mostly for contacts (hundreds), email (Versamail or Snapper), calendar, web browsing and internet connection, some games, GPS would be nice one day.. some other little things probably.

No review of the 650 on TC because we haven't had our hands on a final unit. An extended impressions (Ie the review without the facts.. just my indepth concerns/loves/observations) article should go up today based on my time with a dev unit.

I know a well written explanation was written by Red Mercury, but this article is more descriptive of the T5 instead of the 650. Specifically, I would like to know:
-What is the total size of the NAND chip on the Treo 650? The T5 has a 256 MB chip? What is it on the 650?
-What is the size of the actual hidden (volitile) ram on the 650? Is the ram allocated in the same way that the 32 MB like in the T5 is divided:
*6 MB dynaimc heap
*10 storage heap (to sync with Nand)
*remaining used for decompressed Rom image etc?
-Does the 650 allocate ram in the same way? And if so, is the storage heap the same amount?
-Is is possible to somehow access this builtin hidden ram?
Generally, I would like Treocentral to write a very specific and detailed explanation of the Treo 650 memory architecture if possible...thanks...

Way over my head gf.
Put simply, I would like to know if the 14mb used on my T600 (524 records) will fit on the T650. The only app other than what came with the 600, and its upgrades, is AOL (644k). Any comments from those of you in the know? I guess I will find out next week when the P1 shipment arrives. BTW, just got confirmation that my bluespoon digital has shipped, I will let everyone know how it works upon arrival of both toys.

I have one on order ... other than web-browsing, I prob won't be too hard on it, it's really strange that they didn't put more memory in the thing, it's like they picked 2 yrs ago the memory packet to design around

Hey midmofan,
You said you would return your 650 if you weren't happy with it. When I ordered on viennachannels, it was clearly stated "No refunds". You would need to go to ebay.
I'm guessing you're going to keep it. Disappointing? Yes. Worth it despite this shortcoming? Yes.

well...sorry if my bad..but I think its kinda convienient that no review yet, demo unit or not... definately would have swayed ppls decision...(you had long access to it..we did not) I understand it would be a no win situation for TC because if you gave it rave reviews (good for sales) you would have been flamed with the memory issues.... & if you would have gave it a bad review.. it would have hurt sales & TC store.... so I guess keeping mum would be only option...then again...if you did (hypothetical) know of the now revealed memory issues...some could make a case for not being forthcoming with "issues"to help buyers make informed buying decision. like I said..hypothetically...no malaise intended. ppc6600 looking better.

It seems like most of the so called memory issues are caused by 3rd party Apps.
