I've updated two Palm Treo 700p and both of them suffer from this. I think Palm changed the way how it handles sound alerts because my sound alerts don't make the same sound anymore. I've compared an updated 700p to an original one and there's a noticeable difference when listening to the same alerts on the phone.
Listen to the Alarm Triangle sound and you'll see what I mean.

hey, someone try this out and tell me how it works as my gf is at work: turn the treos radio off and play an alert sound, now turn it back on and play it again. does it still do this with the radio off? i work at radioshack and i was playing around with our demo 755p and dont remember hearing this tone (although i may have just forgotten) and our treo is always off since it is unactivated

I tried it with my phone turned off and it did not make the sound!
Looks like we have found our workaround!

I have not noticed this new Palmtastic "feature" yet, FWIW I only use the ringtones (even for SMS, the beep is too low in noisy environments) and only those present in the phone.

Humoring indeed...chances of a second MR fix for this phone are slim to none; they had to be dragged kicking and screaming the first time around to produce(?) this MR which seems to be just a watered-down copy of the 755p ROM including bugs and all.

Well it doesn't make the dial-tone sound with the radios off, but the sounds are still different after the MR

Those that say they don't have this issue, try this.
Switch your sound off with the switch. from the phone app., enter letters as if to look someone up, but use letters that don't match anyone in your contacts list, like Q, Q. When you get to the point where their is no match, you should get the beep. But the keys with the numbers and the + (W), * (Z), and # (B), will not beep. Another way to test this, is to press the applications button, and use a key to go to an app. but press a key that doesn't match the first letter of any of your apps. This will again produce the beep, and will do so with any of the keys. So in this case, it's like a little error beep.
If you turn the radio off, the beep is gone.

ok, so now that we have isolated it, we just need to figure out what part of the os is not working properly. I am betting the phone app is not properly notifying the sound system that the phone is not currently in a call which then causes the sound system to send a touch tone...although it may be the other way around. this could be related to the way they fixed (or tried to fix) bluetooth dropouts. by telling the bt system the phone is always active, it kept bt from going to standby and thus dropping the connection...they just didn't think about how it might affect the sound system

and it seems to be the star key. I seriously don't understand this company. don't they test this sh!t out first??? it is simple. load every single popular program on the Treo & then add more. then give it to a azzload of Treo power users & everyday users for testing. the listen to their feedback & make a stable fugging phone!! how hard is it you MORONS??!!

Very interesting. Nice find.
Also, with the radio off and ringer switch set to audible, doing the failed contacts lookup produces different sounds from the numbers and the + (W), * (Z), and # (B) keys vs. the other keys. Number keys produce a very faint pop sound vs. the others which are a normal volume level error beep.

Found another faster way to make the beep. Just tap your battery indicator to get the % to show up, then before it goes away, tap another part of the screen...... BEEP!

can someone locate a phone app from pre-mr 700p or from the 680 and upload it so I can see if this will fix the problem?

Did the tests as suggested above and finally noticed it, is too subtle and my hearing is not that good anymore but is there - I am a believer now!
For those interested, the reason I was not finding it before is that I use TakePhone as my default dialer, and these tone DO NOT happen when you dial using TakePhone, only when you use the Palm dialer/contact application.

Killing the beep (sometimes)
Frist off my touch tone sound is very faint, not really what I'd call a big problem, but does qualify as annoying.
Try setting this: Prefs --> Sound & Alerts --> Application==System --> System Volume==Off.
For me, that makes the touch tone sound disappear in the "dial pad" test and the "tap the battery icon" test. Sound is gone with ringer switch in either position.
But the sound is still there in the "world clock alarm" test.

This problem seems to be recorded with the midi tones. Go to sounds on treo, then at the bottom hit manage, push the center button to play ANY sound and u should here the touch tone beep. they seem to have recorded with nearly all the system sounds!!!
