Default Registry Edits / Tweaks

Trying a few edits to see what works.
Had this on my 700wx, Keyboard shortcuts in PIE, works on the 800w
I use "Y" for page up and "H" for page down.

Sychronize multiple exchange mailboxes - I believe this works on the 800w.

To silence the charger connect or disconnect sound:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Volume
under charger connect sound, find chargerconnect.wav and either delete it or put quote marks around it and window won't recognize it.
Same for charger disconnect.

To disable the initiate call beep:

HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\Dialing
Find Script and delete the "P".

This is a homepage you can use in IE that makes browsing faster.
-edit the page in MS Word by adding links
-save document as webpage
-copy to treo, open with file manager, make it default homepage
-page loads when IE is started
click on links to visit webpages, then backspace back to homepage
Saves on button presses to get to favorites.

Also, the MemMaid 2.x "Extreme Speed" auto reg tweaks work very well...

Here are a few that I love from my 700wx and seem to work on the 800w:

I can't stress enough: These tweaks are awesome. Especially 2 and 3 will make web browsing even faster and number one makes volume changing much more natural.

(1) Stop the annoying beeps when you change volume during a call (from fantastic_mr_q). I love this one.
Quote:
Use a registry editor to change the following values (If your not comfortable with this ask for help and we will write a guide for you)

HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\LoudestInCallVolume
HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\QuietestInCallVolume
HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\StandardInCallVolume

within each of these keys the default 'Script' value is 'p' for 'play'

Change the 'Script' value to blank (erase the 'p')

No more annoying beeps and the volume changes quicker! YAY
(2) Increase "Maximum number of concurrent connections" in PIE

I set both to 25.
Quote:
From: HTC Wizard Web

One of the most common and effective tweaks for web browsers on the desktop is also possible for IE on WM5. Stored in the registry are two keys which tell Internet Explorer how many connections it should make to a server when downloading a web page. They define the "Maximum number of concurrent connections" and they're just itching for a tune-up.

By [Creating] the following [DWord] key:

HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main/MaxRequestThreads = 5

to a value higher than the default (5) will enable greater bandwidth saturation during page download and a noticable improvement in page load time. I took a guess and raised the MaxThreads to 10 and have had no problems (thus far).

[Update] Also, you will want to add the dword value:

HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main/MaxConnectionsPerServer

(3)
Change DNS Servers for Web browsing (greatly speeds up browsing)
Quote:
- From the Start Menu, select 'Settings', then select the 'Connections' tab
- Select the 'Connections' option
- Select 'Manage Existing Connections' option
- Highlight your main Internet connection, and click edit (Power Vision)
- Click 'Edit'
- Click 'Next'
- Click 'Next' (do not touch these settings!)
- Click 'Advanced', do not touch your User Name/Password

Now select 'Servers' Tab

- Use specfic server address

Enter in:

DNS: 208.67.222.222

Alt DNS: 208.67.220.220

I haven't tried this yet on the 800w, although I know it worked on the 700wx: http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6...tml#post711638

It basically allows for data fields to be longer when you sync (i.e. if you have a lot of data in the notes section of a contact, it allows for more to be synchronized to your device vs. some of it being truncated)

How quickly after changing the settings did you reboot? Immediately? I'm pretty sure you normally have to wait a few minutes before doing a soft reset in order to get registry changes to stick...does that help?

yeah, they did

Make sure you do a soft reset via some software and not the battery way.

Using the battery way (at least right away) will erase the changes because they were not yet flushed from RAM to ROM. Heed this for all Reg changes

Mal,

I thought it was safe to do a soft reset via the battery as long as you waited a few minutes after making the registry changes? As a matter of fact, I did it that way yesterday (to begin to test the hack I posted above - I just haven't done a sync yet so I haven't been able to finish the test) and the registry change stuck. Am I missing something?

Also, what software would you recommend for soft resets?

Thanks.

You may need to add this to registry to increase conections

Increase # of concurrent connections in PIE to speed up surfing
this is equivalent to "pipelining" on your desktop. The Pro...more speed..the Con...each additional connection uses a little more memory. The following keys work on both wm5 and wm6..they may or may NOT exist on your system in which case you will want to create them as new DWORD keys.

HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main/MaxRequestThreads = 10
HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main/MaxConnectionsPerServer = 10

Values up to 50 were tried..some folks used 20, 30, 50 etc so it's something you can experiment with but the default is usually 4 or 5 so this in effect is doubling it.

To change # of characters in a text message, change the "MaxCharsPerMsg" value, however on sprint I can sent longer text but it is sent in two messages. Also some other values in this registry key.

HKLM\software\palm\varnish\messaging\sms
MaxCharsPerMsg=160
MaxPartsPerMsg=1
MaxRecipients=10
GetNumCharsPerMessageSMS=160

Don't change the "MaxCharsPerMsg".

Instead change the MaxPartsPerMsg to 10 (from 1) and it will allow you 10 messages (1600 total characters). You can increase/decrease as you see fit from there.

If you change MaxCharsPerMsg it will work, but it will show the number of essages incorrectly.

For example if you set MaxCharsPerMsg to 1600 and type 1599 characters, it will show 1599 characters, 1 message. Your poor receipient will receive 10 SMS's.

(Ask me how I know.... )
