Default Sprint TreoPro Phone as Modem / Internet Sharing

I use Internet Sharing quite a bit on my Treo Pro. I'd only used it on 3 PCs and it worked fine - so I thought it would work on any PC.

I tried it for the first time on my friends PC and Windows said it needed drivers.

My question is does Internet Sharing need Activesync installed for it to work? Or was it a problem with my friends PC?

All the PCs I've got have Activesync installed on them.

TIA

Red face Sprint TreoPro Phone as Modem / Internet Sharing

I have done this with my other phones for years with no problem. Worked on my Treo 700P, 755P, Centro but I cannot get it to work with the Treo Pro.

I have tried USBModem, and WMWifiRouter. I have checked my ICS and it appears to be working after I deleted the two regkeys.

Has anyone else been able to get it to work. I primarily like the Bluetooth method but at this point I am not to picky. I use this feature from time to time and it has saved my butt.

Any info would be appreciated. Oh in case it matters. I am using a Macbook.
shouldn't none of those settings have changed just the phone.

Although included in the 800w also, I have had to do registry tweaks to get it to work. If you have done these tweaks with the STP then it you would think it would work. Try these steps after doing the registry tweaks....
1. Start your data connection (either with PIE or another program that requires a connection) and then close that program (not required but saves memory),
2. Start ICS and click on connect (Either bluetooth or USB but make sure you are NOT physically connected yet),
3. Now connect your PC or laptop to the phone (bluetooth or connect the USB cable).

This is how I need to connect my 800w, maybe the same for the STP

I got WMWifirouter to work on my Pro today.

I did some speed test thru the tethering.

I am averaging 1.7 Kbps download and 350 bps upload. My house must be near a tower.

I get 4 to 5 bars on my 800w. I am getting 2 to 3 bars on my Pro.

Which version?

Nevermind, just downloaded the latest trial version. I tried a free older version of this on my Saga and all it did was freeze the phone. This works great. I am online through PDANet, and my wife is on her Mac laptop. My company laptop cannot be configured for computer-to-computer networks.

The lastest version works fine.

Your company laptop can do wireless? You got admin right to install a PCMCIA card?

Yes, it has built in wireless, but don't have admin rights to change networking changes. When I select to "allow" comp-to-comp networks, it will not retain the change.

Wait for the moment when you get temp admin rights like when you got an approved software to install. Then do it.

You got ActiveSync on the biz laptop?

Yes, sure do. I had to load my own copy of Outlook (we use Lotus Notes at work).

Current version of PDANet works with your Sprint Treo Pro?

I see that OrionNE was unable to get USBModem to work. Could someone else try it as well to confirm it does not work please? OrionNE couldn't get WMWifiRouter working either, but a couple people have gotten that to work. Thanks for the help folks.

Are there any registry hacks for the STP to enable internet sharing without a phone as a modem plan? The Treo 800w had the following hack:

HKLM\Comm\InternetSharing
Delete this string: Extension - IcsHelper.dll

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\InternetSharing\LastCellConnection
If it displays "Power Vision" change it to "Sprint PCS"

However these entries are not in the STP.

Have you tried adding them?

The first string needs to be removed, so adding it would not help. However I have a PAM plan so I can't test the tweak myself. I am considering getting the STP for someone who doesn't have a PAM plan, but I want to make sure there is a registry tweak to enable PAM w/o a plan just as there is on the Treo 800w and several other WinMo phones.

I notice that my wifirouter is no more draining while my Pro is connected to the AC! Very nice!

But the phone get so hot! Hotter than my 800w. WOW. It might died soon. I'll get another Pro if it does.
