funky characters in gmail contacts

Anyone else have this problem: when I imported my contacts from gmail, many of them came in with funky rectangles around the name like this:

[]Joe[][] Smith [][]

I assume those are some un-recognized character (quotes? angle brackets?) that got inserted somewhere by something. Anyone else run into this? Any good solutions out there?
